Lily Blossoms: The Week In Thanks

Dena got a chance to meet up with two friends that she'd not seen in a while. That makes it two weeks in a row that she's been able to re-connect. I'm always glad when she gets a chance to shake off her workaholic nature and kick back with her buddies.

Yes, workaholic. For example on Saturday night she stayed up past 1am working on the minutes for our latest condominium board meeting. By that time her night-owl spouse was settling in for the start of a Tommy Lee Jones action movie which had some completely unbelievable sequences in it (such as smelting a knife from raw metal using a simple campfire - a reality that would devastate the s'mores industry if iron were really that weak). She and I stayed up and giggled at the ludicrousness of 60something Jones running down a street car from behind. It was a fun and impromptu date.

She also makes a delicious pot of spaghetti that lasts four days' worth of lunches.

Fantasy basketball draft is this Saturday, and I'm delighted with the data available from fantasypros.com to do my usual insane amount of number-crunching.

I've also been playing a lot of Wordscraper, the Scrabble knockoff game through Facebook. I like to square off against the computer on level 10 and am able to hold my own against it.

My Yahoo-declared "awful" fantasy football team is now 4-1 and in third place out of 12. Take that Yahoo!

We had a slight spell of 30-degree temperatures overnight and breezy cool days that were perfect for long, hot baths to shake off the chill. Easy to forget what a world minority we are to have this so permanently available.

I've been on a nostalgic quest trying to get my old Commodore 128 computer up and running so as to retrieve some stories that Jack and I wrote in our teens. Ebay, thank you for existing as I hunt down the word processing program, and a monitor.

Yesterday was Lily Stevens' birthday, thanks to another medical marvel of inducement. 20 hours of labor is grueling enough, I can see why infant mortality was so high in generations and why we're so fortunate that her safe birth was nearly a sure thing.

Speaking of birthdays, Cupcake's first was celebrated by more Dena treats - fabulous chocolate cupcakes - and we got her some new toys. A year after she was orphaned by a coyote attack and found her way to our arms, she's a daily joy to us, cute as a button and maturing in ways that make every morning more enjoyable to meet.

Random person I'm thankful for is Doug Micklich, our band's drummer who has extensive family commitments that bring him regularly to play at two different churches in two different towns every Sunday, plus occasional long drives up north to help family. He's got more energy than me and is an ideal heartbeat for us.

Finally, amid all the turbulence of Lily's arrival, we were able to have a smooth, relaxed band rehearsal and a leisurely lunch after the Mass. These are the best of times!
