There may be more media outlets to broadcast these recent recessions than at any other time in history, but I'm not sure I agree with those who foretell doom.
Check out this graph of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The last ten years look pretty lifeless, almost no growth.
Have a look at 1915-1942. The DJIA started and ended at about the same place.
The market took off from 1942-1965 or so.
Not much happened between 1965-1983.
The economy rolled from 1983-2000.
Percentage-wise, the index was much more volatile during the first part of the 20th century.
We are still a nation growing steadily, unlike many other large countries.
Yes, there are some new problems. But there have always been new problems.
I see us as taking a break from an uphill run. 2008 might have been one of those heaving breaths you have after a long sprint. When we're ready, our country's fitness will take us onward and upward again.
