The 5th grade lady Hornets of Eureka elementary school faced several obstacles in Friday night basketball action.
The long drive to Bloomington. The opposing fans. The ever-somber watch of Jesus, Mary and other Catholic imagery staring down from the walls of Holy Trinity school.
And perhaps overconfidence from a 37-7 recent victory over these same Saints.
In this rabid rivalry the deafening pre-game warmup atmosphere was tense for the coaches and players...
... and also for the fans...
The hard-fought contest was a low-scoring struggle through the first half, with each team employing a "get as many jump balls as possible" strategy...
The scoreboard read 4-4 late into the second quarter before the Hornets eked ahead.
High-scoring Courtney Heffren was all business during the halftime shoot-around...
In the third quarter Eureka's talent on the bench and the floor proved too much for Holy Trinity.
Head coach Thad Heffren made the right adjustments, telling the younger to "just steal the ball from them and score layups..."
The Hornets pulled away for the win, with Courtney adding some hocus-pocus of an overhead cross-court pass late in the fourth that swished through the net, silencing the gape-mouthed crowd.
"I wasn't trying to do that!" she said during the post-game press conference.
The Hornets head into a Saturday double-header in Tri-Valley with the momentum of an entertaining win.
