You couldn't help but walk in expecting a somber experience for a movie based on 9/11.
This is the story of Oskar Schell, an awkward but bright young boy whose memories of his quirky but bright father (Tom Hanks) are both heroic and excruciatingly guilty after he died in the terrorist attack.
His mother (Sandra Bullock) has a supporting role but the film is all about Oskar. Convinced that his father left him some clues to unlock a great urban mystery that the two had begun together, he traipses all about the city in what becomes an impassioned quest to keep his dad close.
In the end, everyone wins.
It may be the best non-comedy that we'll see all year. Take it in with a spirit of how fortunate we are, and be reminded.
