F.X. Muldoon was the advertising manager for the largest-circulation weekly magazine in the United Kingdom. He had these principles for making a new relationship:
1. Look people in the eye and smile. Your message goes where you voice goes, and your voice goes where your eyes send it. Eye contact engenders trust. Smiling makes you appear happy and confident. Say "great" three times to yourself as you approach someone.
2. Fit in - become a chameleon. We feel relaxed and comfortable with people who are like us. Synchronize your body language with others' to achieve an immediate connection.
3. Capture the imagination, and you capture the heart. Use sensory-rich language an images so others can see, hear, feel and sometimes even taste and smell what you mean.
Exercise: For one day, make a mental note of the eye color of every person you meet. It forces you to make just enough eye contact to be meaningful.
