“The best way I can describe it is there are parallel fronts—the job of building the scouting and player development foundation that is going to serve well for the long haul and treating every opportunity to win as sacred.” - Theo Epstein, recently named general manager of the Chicago Cubs
This was Epstein's way of saying that he doesn't use the term "rebuilding" to explain a team that seems distant from championship caliber. Success comes from good habits. By considering the long haul and the present, he discards excuses and holds himself accountable to a high standard.
In terms of a first step, this is a good one.
