Movie Review: When The Game Stands Tall

A sports movie would have to try really hard to lose my vote. This one did just fine.

De LaSalle High School in California won a national record 151 consecutive games before losing one. Twelve straight state championships and a chance for a 13th. Will they do it?

The best sports flicks are covers for human stories, and this one's got a plentifully solid foundation.

- Will the coach's health hold up, or will he take the year off?
- Will he take a job at a college?
- Will the wife accept him not taking a job at a college?
- Will the son prove he belongs on the team?
- Will the son accept him taking a year off?
- Will the star running back break the state scoring record?
- Will the star wide receiver keep his ego in check?
- What about the graduate who's friend is shot?
- Can the beat the #1 ranked team?

The coach is the best character in the movie, eternally peacefully calm as I deeply admire in leaders.

The running back's father is the craziest, such an over-the-top caricature of a rabid parent that it had us laughing in amazement by the end.

The right guys win in the end, so you can walk away with a smile.

Feel free to wait this one out if you don't want to pay in-theater prices, but give it a watch if you liked Remember the Titans.
