Eyes On The Right Prize

At work or in relationships there can be high pressure on results. Meet this deadline. Finish this assignment. Clean that room.

The other day I had a student behind on homework assignments. We cranked out a few problems.

He wasn't retaining much of anything though. His mind was somewhere else.

Turns out, he'd had a really bad day.

We didn't get much homework done during that session. Instead, when he started talking about his day, I just listened and empathized. After he was done, he brightened up. Then we made a game plan for the next week to try to get him back on track.

Relationships come first. Results come second (and they will definitely come, once the first is there). In any given moment, it's been greatly helpful to keep the eyes on the right prize.
