Smiling Downhill

Sled rides are fun, yeah?

Sit in place, legs up, coast with gravity faster and faster. Enjoy the thrill as the scenery flies by and your adrenaline surges.

Do kids notice all the bumps along the way? Let their heads fill up with dismay over the jarring ride? No. As we ease out of youth and into maturity, and down the slope of the hill of adulthood, we lose sight of the limitless sky above, and of the exciting journey in front of us with its unpredictable possibilities. We rivet ourselves to the imperfections of the sled, to the uncomfortable shimmies, and try to fix the impossible. If we reach the end that way, we'll have nothing left but to look back longingly at the joy we missed. As long as we're on this hill, we owe it to ourselves to gaze up, peer down, peek side to side, and smile at all the treasures that flood our senses.
